Over the past two years (2023-2025), I have had the pleasure of serving as the Instructor of Record for eight sections of a Rutgers undergraduate course titled, “The Structure of Information,” building connections with over 600 students. I am additionally scheduled to teach four more sections of this course this academic year (2025-2026).
The Structure of Information (04:189:152) is a hybrid course that fulfills a general education requirement while additionally counting towards the Digital Communication, Information, and Media minor. It therefore attracts undergraduate students from every year across a wide variety of majors, generating a wonderfully diverse classroom environment. As an instructor, I strive to demonstrate my own passion for the material, challenge students to think deeply and critically about questions of information, instill concrete writing and citation skills, foster a classroom environment conducive to participation, and offer support both inside and outside the classroom.
The following testimony is taken from the anonymous Student Instructional Rating surveys conducted by Rutgers at the conclusion of each semester.
“Professor Mestre was incredibly supportive and created an encouraging environment for everyone in the class. Her passion for the subject was evident in every lecture, as she brought an infectious energy that made the material engaging and relatable. It was clear that she possessed a deep understanding of the topic, which she communicated effectively through thoughtful explanations and real–world examples. Her dedication to student success was reflected in her willingness to provide guidance and answer questions, making her a truly inspiring and approachable educator.” FS24 Section 05&06
"Professor Mestre was my favorite professor this semester! I loved participating in every class. The readings she gives are mostly engaging (with a couple that were a little tough to read). She goes into depth with them and answered all my questions about the assignment. I frequently emailed her, and she always got back to me very quickly. I usually email my professor too much and they kind of get annoyed with me, but she encouraged us to ask more questions." SP25 Section 03
“She effectively explained instructions and expectations and was responsive to student questions whether in class or over email. She created assignments that truly benefitted student understanding and engagement and were not just busy work. She was positive and kind [...] This course encouraged intellectual growth by prompting difficult philosophical questions and debates that challenged ideas we don't normally take the time to think about.” FS24 Section 05&06
"Professor Mestre is not only extremely knowledgeable of the course material but also passionate. She conveys the material in a very cohesive manner that generates interest amongst her students. Despite the many readings and writing assignments throughout the course, I find myself looking forward to listening to her in lecture." SP25 Section 03
"I appreciated Professor Mestre's attentiveness and willingness to answer any questions in person or via email. She is clearly passionate about the topics we covered and made me want to learn more about the material, which I appreciate as a student. Professor Mestre provided thorough feedback on our assignments including any big papers or proposals, which is very helpful to use and shows her attention to detail. Her overview of APA at the beginning of the semester was very helpful and thorough; I use her resources in my other courses that require APA, demonstrating how useful her crash course has really been.” FS24 Section 07&08
“I love how Professor Mestre does a good balance of lecturing and calling on students to participate. It makes the class so much more engaging and she is always so supportive of student's answers.” FS24 Section 07&08
“I liked Professor Mestre and her enthusiasm. She was always willing to help students, answering all questions with kindness and understanding. It was never a bore to sit in her lectures because it was straight to the point, and she fully understood the material she was teaching.” SP24 Section 04
"Created an amazing environment in the class that makes everyone feel comfortable to share and participate" SP25 Section 04
"my favorite part of this course is working with Professor Mestre because she really makes an effort to involve us in the discussion and make sure that we understand her expectations of our work." FS23 Section 05&06
"She was an absolute pleasure of a professor and encouraged us to do better with prompts and assignments that were challenging but not too challenging, just the right amount so that if we paid attention in class we would know what to do! Would love to take a course taught by her again." FS23 Section 07&08
